A Crown Of Thorns

The one to be crowned king.
He's come to save His people,
And end their suffering.

Each day they followed in His footsteps,
The blind the weak, the lame.
Praying for the chance to feel His touch,
Ease their suffering and pain.

The burden of their expectations,
Weighed heavy upon His heart.
Would they understand the gift of love,
His words and touch were to impart?

He knew understanding was distorted;
Though each could quiote the prophesies.
Their faith must carry past a crown of thorns,
To see the glory of a risen king.

Each morning He met His Father,
Kneeling in solemn prayer.
Even the gentle "Lamb Of God."
Found His solace there.

The night was fast approaching.
When He would be betrayed.
A crown of thorns would pierce His brow,.
Where they believed, a diadem would lay.

Suddenly, rough hands grasped Him,

Harsh voices broke the still night air.

As they bound the gentle Savior;

There was no love ~ but His found there.

A crown of thorns crudely fashioned,

Was forced upon His head.

His garb, a robe of purple ~

The soldiers; mocking Him again.

The crowd restless and fearful,

Were started to hear Pilate say,

"I find no guilt in this man;"

What would"you, have me do this day?

The answer "Crucify Him!"

Must have cut His heart with pain.

And many who once followed Him,

A rough hewn cross was quickly fashioned,

With a sign proclaiming, "King of the Jews".

And cruelly laid upon His shoulders,

There was no time to lose.

Through the streets of Jerusalem,

To a hill outside the town.

Christ carried a cross weighted with sin,

For His children; one He gladly bore.

There atop Golgotha,

Nailed to that cruel cross.

His view was of Jerusalem;

And the precious souls He knew were lost.

A soft voice issued from the cross,

The simple words, "I thirst."

Sour wine on a branch of hyssop,

Was lifted mockingly; to quench His thirst.

The bitter cup thus emptied,

He whispered, "It is finished."

Head bowed He surrendered His spirit,

In to the hands of God.

"Greater love hath no one then this, that one

lay down his life for his friends.

John 15.3 NAS
